Universidade do Porto

The project is located in “Fontainhas”, in the city of Porto, delimited by Douro River, an automobile viaduct and neighbourhood in degradation. Faced with a varied program, a Cultural Center, a Student Residence, Collective Housing and Commerce, with 29000m2, it was decided to design a multifunctional building where, through a single gesture, several problems would be solved, including not only the entire program in the same volume, as an urban attitude of union of the two existing buildings. The scale of the project suggested the study of the Unité d’Habitation of Le Corbusier, Robin Hood Gardens of Alison and Peter Smithson, and Gallaratese of Aldo Rossi. All based on a plan land, except the Fontainhas project, conditioned by the abrupt cliff where it’s implanted, in a dense and degraded urban context. The continuity of “Alameda das Fontainhas” was possible with the liberation of the roof in pilotis, where the access to the building is resolved and the viewpoint is maintained. The social question was central in the programmatic blending in the building. Faced with the degradation of the social housing, it emerged the desire of merge lower cost and small areas with collective housing. The idea arises from the purpose of social housing losing the pejorative character, in an attempt to unify the housing in a New Social, in a union of social classes in the same space or building.
