BUILDING THE EMPTYNESS
Universidade de Lisboa -
Faculdade de Arquitectura
Extension of the Faculty of Architecture
Emptiness arises in Art like an artist's refusal for the conventions of the outside world.
In the city, emptiness is a space of possibilities and expectations, the ineffable memory of a presence that no longer exists - aside from the metropolis' daily life - where time has stagnated. In architecture, emptiness is the protagonist, the space contained and the vacuous where our experiences take place. Summarizing, the emptiness is the consummation of the tabula rasa that defies our creative ability and sends us back to a freedom regarding the pre-established ideas of a specific space-time context. The current work constitutes the result of a theoretical reflection over the subject of emptiness - in the context of Art, the City and Architecture - that supports and is materialized in the extension project of the Faculty of Architecture, located in Ajuda, Lisbon. As a project methodology, drawing/sketching takes a fundamental role in the structuring of the architectonic thought. As an exercise of abstraction and visual translation of thought, it guided the search for form. We intend that the new proposed Faculty of Architecture, a space for learning Architecture, is constituted as a tabula rasa, over which the creative potential of all students shall emerge.
