PATRIMONIAL RESTORATION IN OPORTO

Quarteirão da Pedreira Rehabilitation
Oporto city's solid appearance is reinforced in this centrality, the Quarteirão da Pedreira (Pedreira's city block) takes on a different configuration from its surroundings’ through its volume, featuring two built fronts and a "natural" one, resulting in the coexistence of two uncommon realities in the urban environment.
The façades set the pace through its openings, and its stonework and wrought iron, the wooden frames that insist in not closing, all have to offer what other centralities or cities lack, the magic of time. Quarteirão da Pedreira's first phase of intervention intends to solve the problems related to urban contextualization, introducing a greater permeability to this body. The abandoned shacks and patios will be intervened so that this forgotten core gives place to leisure areas, a multi-purpose plaza and a viewpoint over the city. The accesses planned at this higher point will be adapted to the residents needs and designed to incentive leisure activities with the purpose of recovering traditions, as well as the creation of areas that allow for the transversal cultures. Regarding the second phase of intervention, we intend to connect this cell to its surrounding tissue by means of formal solutions to darn this city block, to the Northwest and South. The stylistic unity of the three first buildings of Loureiro Street push its rehabilitation towards a lodging function. This consolidation and restoration intervention aims to incorporate the existing ruin, which will function as a bearing, articulating the low point (area of convergence) with the high point (multi-purpose plaza and viewpoint). This core spot within Oporto features a big flow of people, which motivated the restoration of these buildings towards a programme that is structured regarding different lodging alternatives.
