SCHOOL BUILDING AS GENERATOR OF PUBLIC SPACE IN SANTO ANTÓNIO OF PRÍNCIPE
Santo António, the smallest city in the world with 1300 habitants is placed on a territory of urban mosaic where the formal colonial and the informal confront each other. The problems of the territory are the result of the priority given to the limited infraestructural resources and preexistent susperstructures that atenuate the lack of urban quality and contribute to progressive desertification.
The program of the urban (re)design is prospective and incides on a new urban atractive capacity translated in a multifunctional building, a technical and vocational school that becomes a new centrality. Its design follows the election of “primary elements” and the proposal of a new system based on public spaces that relate the formal and informal city.
The building´s program reflects a spacial organization focused on the local´s lifestyle. It is sctructured
through a Street sedimented with various activities which go beyond teaching and relate to everyday life.
The materiality focuses on the pre-existing resources in the Island of Príncipe, using local materials and construction techniques feasible even with low-skill labor. The materials used are the result of a project research, namely wicker, stone powder and earth, to which 5% of cement or lime is added to improve the resistance levels of the blocks. The viability of the compressed earth blocks (CEB) constructive system was tested in the laboratories of Montemor-O-Novo. The materiality consubstantiates a language eventually associated with the works of Solano Benitez and progressively acquired autonomy according to the simulation and the local environmental context, the proximity of the equator and rain, which averages a monthly value of 350mm (350 liters per m2).
The dwelling was based in local culture, namely dormitories instead of rooms, confection of food outdoors and low water resourcers. The typologies presented result of the interpretative basis called: the house.
