CENTRO INTERPRETATIVO DA CORTIÇA PARA O CARAMUJO, ALMADA NASCENTE
In the approach to the memories of the cork industry, an economic activity that was part of the past of the parish of Cova da Piedade and Caramujo in Almada, it was intended to revive the memories and the imaginary around this industry and its heritage, proposing to the place of intervention an urban strategy that focuses on a road and pedestrian restructuring; the creation of parking, public space, green areas and community gardens; the reconversion of the band of existing warehouses for a market and insertion of new construction: health equipment, housing and an interpretive center. The interpretive center intends to portray the history of cork industry in Caramujo, where the process of cork oak, cork manufacture and potentiality is approached. The program offers spaces that reveal to visitors what this product is, where it comes from, the process of extraction, manufacture and the advantages in terms of thermal, acoustic and ecological. The theoretical process is demonstrated in showrooms and through interactive films, and the practical one is developed in experimental laboratories with the support of technology. The objectives of this center are to connect people and social groups of several generations, to provide training through the provision of spaces and training activities, where professionals and workers in the cork industry show their knowledge to less qualified workers and unemployed young people at the beginning of their professional activity, with the intention of developing employment and also of exploring the potentiality of cork; allow students, entrepreneurs and researchers from the cork industry to visit and enjoy the spaces of this equipment (being managed by Almada City Hall), can be loaned or leased by universities, schools and school companies to hold scientific events, school and professional.
