DA QUINTA DAS CONCHAS AO PARQUE DO VALE GRANDE
Universidade de Lisboa

The urban green spaces carry out several ecosystem services, which are fundamental to the health and well-being of the population. To maximize the success of urban green spaces in the future, two urban parks were used as case studies. For having such different realities, the chosen parks were Quinta das Conchas e dos Lilases (16th and 19th centuries), with an area of 29.2 ha, and Parque do Vale Grande (2006), with 24 ha, both located in the area covered by Plano de Urbanização do Alto do Lumiar, in the northern part of Lisbon. It’s intended to analyze the uses and experiences of these two parks in terms of usage rate and practiced activities.

To obtain data, quantitative and qualitative research methods were used, namely behavioral maps, participant observation and questionnaires. Behavioral maps were developed with data collected through participant observation at different times of the day, week, and year, in order to collect more diverse and comprehensive information. The questionnaires were conducted with the purpose of obtaining data regarding the preferred activities and habits of the visitors.

Bearing in mind that the two parks in study present very different realities, the objectives of this study were to understand the reasons for this disparity and connect, requalify and boost the green spaces of Alta de Lisboa. Therefore, a proposal was defined with the intention of improving the quality of these spaces (mainly the quality of Parque do Vale Grande), to transform them into more dynamic and pleasant spaces that promote social inclusion. It’s still fundamental to give continuity to the urban green area development, and establish a connection betwen the green spaces of Alta de Lisboa and the ones existing in the surrounding áreas, which are quite fragmented. In the particular case of Parque do Vale Grande, it’s intended to capitalize its potencial in order to become a success, at the image of Quinta das Conchas e dos Lilases.
