ESTAÇÃO DE OBSERVAÇÃO NO SILO DE PAVIA
The framing concept constructs the framing action that means integrating some-thing into a given medium or context. It is a conscious positioning of thought, which seeks to adapt, in harmony, a theme or object. It is based on this concept that the proposal analyzes and is the result of a theoretical reflection on the pro-cess adopted for its architectural design, which uses analog photography as a tool to inform observation and reflection.
The project emerges in the establishment of an understanding of the relations be-tween the concepts of Landscape and Industrial Heritage in the context of the Évora region, analyzing the railway system and the silos in this territory. Their strategic location and height, offer a privileged site to observe the surrounding area, and these characteristics inspired the definition of a program and the con-ceptual idea that would guide the proposal.
In the specific context of Pavia, in the silo of the local railway station, the proposal was guided by the concept of framing. Since the beginning, it was sought to de-fine the windows shape and place that look to the surroundings. The use of the camera, as an 'extension of the eye', enabled the identification and valuation of the surroundings and the heritage, as a whole, preserving its memory.
The aim of the project was to understand how the use of analog photography could inform the architectural process, in the understanding of the place and the definition of the boundary of the frame, as provided by a window. Based on this reflection, the proposal emerges as a place designed for the purpose of photog-raphy study. This option changes the place that is now a complementary facility to the recent cycling path, a rest and an observation point. The name 'Observation Station' derives therefore from the inheritance of the link established between the original function, a train station, and the new function that emerged from the place.
Regarding proportion (the measure) and the image topic (object of contempla-tion), a strong relationship is established between the lens (the eye of photog-raphy) and the window (the eye of architecture). Throughout the process, the de-cision to capture a photography is the decision to draw a window. It is a process of communication with the surroundings and with the world.
