The geographical context is essential for vernacular architecture, and thus conditioning its fundamental characteristics. This project, in the south of Galicia, is located in a terrain with a steep slope, organized in a terrace system, of whose unevenness the project benefits from.

For the most part, the soil of the region is used for farming, so it was important to optimise the area of implantation, by reducing its area. The model of compact house was used, which is characteristic of this region, and in which the fire assumes a decisive role.

Regarding the program, an evolutionary interpretation of the vernacular house was adopted, differentiating 4 sectors related to its basic activities: living area, intimate area, working space, and hygiene area.

The retaining walls protect the building from the prevailing winds and confer privacy to it. The North elevations are thus more closed, coinciding with the façades more exposed to the public domain. The material chosen was the granite stone. By contrast, the South and East façades are executed with wood elements, allowing the placement of larger spans, and thus also allowing a greater permeability.

The significance of the wine culture is well expressed in the consolidation of the landscape of the region. The use of vegetation as a complement of intervention was fundamental to manage the sun exposure of the proposal. While the south façade uses a porch, which arises from the extension of the roof, the east façade uses an adjoining transition space, with deciduous vegetation.

There are no common public areas in Fraga. Therefore, it was interesting to provide a space for collective use. The proposal intends to create a public domain enclosure, also solving the articulation of elevations and accesses.

The material used is found in the constructive culture of the region. The constructive solutions selected were adapted to the available local resources: its extraction is near; its processing is simple and adjusted to the type of workmanship available.

The applied technology is intended for a pragmatic solution. Thus, granite and wood assume a natural structural role within the various architectural components. Materials are used without almost any coatings, and fulfilling a certain function according to their main characteristics.

Aplicação de estratégias sustentáveis na Galiza Meridional
This project’s fundamental objective is the development of a housing program based on the application of a multidisciplinary sustainability concept.
The adopted perspective considers sustainable development as one that meets the needs of the present, without compromising those of future societies, using strategies that promote the intelligent use of available resorts.
Pre-industrial vernacular architecture was used as a reference, in order to establish a respectful relationship between intervention and context, in a cultural, economic and environmental dimension.

The present research is based on the analysis of a set of houses, objectively inspired in the vernacular heritage of Galicia. These cases reinterpret in a critical way the formal and procedural principals of the vernacular construction. This was precisely the main objective of the Project: the practical application of a scientific reflection, which refutes the copy and values the methodologies.
