THE OLD SLAUGHTERHOUSE OF OPORTO
Universidade de Coimbra - Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologias
The area of intervention is defined by a central and unifying element: The São Roque da Lameira street in Oporto. Through History, this old access ended up being cracked by the appearance of bigger infrastructures and equipment; the scales were in a conflict between local meshes located on the other side of the highway, where the local Slaughterhouse of Oporto was located.
The aim of the proposition is to connect different infrastructures and the existing spaces in Vale de Campanhã, the exit street of the city; the Circunvalação highway; the lanes, the railway, its bridges and stations; Cintura Interna Way with its knots and overpasses; the subway railways, and the new Estadio do Dragao surrounding area. The main idea is qualifying the remaining gaps of that evolution: the courtyards, the “islands”, the uncultivated lands, and old farms and the industry ruins.
In a practical study, the aim is offering a new centralization and new urban factors to the Western Porto city area, having the old Slaughterhouse central building as a main target of this work as well as its urban surroundings. There are two scales studied, and however different, they complete each other. The first scale, which is a more urbanistic approach, looks forward to engage the territory that surrounds the old industrial building in a strategic way, improving the organization of this zone. The second scale, which is related to the Slaughterhouse, suggests a programmatic possibility, since the base of the subject is to preserve and transmit the industrial heritage.
The Slaughterhouse can lodge a huge number of functions and among those an “indus¬trial cluster”. It could be transformed in cultural destined areas like a museum with an industrial archeological estate forgotten in Palácio do Freixo as well as some equipment or activities in need of a huge working space. Taking in count its proximity to the Estádio do Dragão, the industrial building would have some areas available to complement and support the needs of this soccer club.
