CULTURAL CENTRE IN GRILO
Universidade de Évora
The choice of the intervention site, with the premise of an exhibition space program of contemporary art, focused on the eastern part of the riverfront in Lisbon.
The Grilo's place was selected because it is a discontinued part of the city, with urgent needs. The overlay of infrastructure and buildings of different generations define a space where the absence of planning and loss of function of many of these components manifest an obsolete set. The physical barrier of the railway line, the number of unoccupied industrial buildings and underground occupations on the bound line of the railway and the construction of the Lisbon harbor are the main reasons of distance between the city and the river. The intervention proposes a regeneration of the place through a public crossing, merging the city with the riverfront. The building offers the city a slower course than the urban speed, where the interaction with the art works by the visitor gives sense to the interventionist concept of contemporary art.
The exhibition spaces are characterized by the indirect light study, that cancels the passage of the outside world time, creating a space without reference to the outside and with complete freedom to reciprocal interaction between the work and the visitor, an inner process. The building also includes work spaces for artistic production that are implanted in proximity to coastline, more consolidated section of the place, bringing to the artists the matter they work, the contemporary man.
This study it's a merger between the urgent problems of a place, a cultural program and the contemporary man, and the proposal spatial intentions were constantly thought from their time dimension.
