PROJECTINDEX

REAL COMPANHIA VINÍCOLA MUSEUM
Universidade Lusófona do Porto

Intervention in the Real Companhia Vinícola block
The relations between the existing constructions and the buildings to be constructed were constituted through the principle established in the project approach:
the volumes never touch each other and assume their different architectonic languages. The proposal for the building's implantation is based on the pre-existences' limits, assuming a perimeter occupation and a longitudinal positioning with respect to the streets, freeing the bloc's inner area. Regarding volumetrics, there is an intention to establish a continuous dialogue with the alignment of the edifications that compose the urban fronts in which the block is inserted. The new building's height templates originate in the architectonic needs of the different inner spaces that form the museum, conjugated with the analysis of the existing buildings’ proportions and of the exterior spaces. The public spaces of pedestrian character are constituted by a set of patios that divide into two categories: public and private. Regarding the public spaces, there are three patios of different proportions that work in succession and allow for the entrance into the museum's spaces, as well as the longitudinal crossing of the bloc, from Sousa Aroso Street, to the south, or Menéres Avenue, to the north. The fundamental intention of this system is that of articulating and harmonising the building's functioning with the city and the population. Regarding private spaces, there is a patio that closes the pre-existing industrial chimney, once belonging to a small factory. In this space we can find the administration area and the museum's main lobby, giving it a prominent position that evokes the industrial memory of the site.
