HERDADE DO PEREIRO (MARVÃO - ALENTEJO) CASE STUDY
The Rural Landscape in transforming and, with it, so is society's way of thinking.
The growth of new dynamics in the rural world has developed the concept of Rural Landscape Multi-functionality, which intends that rural areas are understood as agricultural space but also as patrimonial (natural and cultural) space. As a case study, we chose Herdade do Pereiro (an exlibris of the village of Marvão) in order to demonstrate that multifunctionality and sustainability are the solution to fight countryside desertification and to create a model that can be used to compare with other similar cases. The methodology used to study the site is based on the concept of "System-Landscape", by Magalhães et al (2007). The analysis of cultural factors allows for an ecological and cultural interpretation of the space, that gives us guidelines for a concise and sustainable proposal.
The integration of the Fundamental Ecological Structure and the Cultural Structure allows for the elaboration of the Planning and Re-qualification Proposal, that gathers various possible uses to the site, without jeopardizing the ecological balance of the system. The proposal intends to get back the acknowledgement of the site's importance to the region's economic development, creating a sustainable cycle between the area's preservation and the economic power, that is, the agrarian activity should be integrally regained, the existing natural and cultural patrimonies should be preserved and open to interpretation, and the total gains generated will allow for the normal functioning of the complex. We intend to create a self-sustainable cycle between the area's preservation and the economic power. Undeterred by the country's current condition, there are several incentives directed at rural areas, and the site's positioning within São Mamede Mountain Range's National Parque allows for added opportunities.
