XABREGAS SPORTS COMPLEX
The intervention site is located between Manutenção Street and Infante D. Henrique Avenue.
Even though this stretch of city benefits from optimal solar exposure, close to the river, it suffers from problematic old industrial surroundings of which ageing and degradation have taken custody. We propose the implantation of a sports infrastructure, given its contribution to improving the area's offer in terms of sports practice and answering the demands in this field and, also, revitalising the surrounding area. The project consists in a volume whose image is intended to be that of a continuous wall stretching throughout the terrain, defining axis and limits. Two bodies arise in the site's extremities in order to capitalise the terrain, and functioning as a context to the outer premises, destined to sports practice. The two volumes take different functions: to the north, the pools ensemble; to the south, the gymnasiums. Although autonomous, they both communicate through a gallery in which trophies and sports events are exposed, that also works as support to the cafeteria. Outside, as stadium benches, in the games precinct. We tried that natural light would reach all spaces through patios, louvers and openings under the outer precinct’s access ramps. Such project solution allows for the light to traverse the parking floor and, at night, the artificial light to limit the games precinct, creating the illusion of a space that levitates. The walls that surround the compound should protect the users from the highway, limiting green areas and redesigning Tejo river's horizon, compromised by the stacking of containers in the riverine peer.
